Meta chief Alexandr Wang has been busy on X, tossing jokes about the company’s new AI assistant Muse. The assistant, announced in early May, can help users with tasks ranging from email to smart‑home control, and is only available to U.S. customers for now. Wang’s latest post poked fun at the rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei by inserting Meta’s own mascot between the two in an edited photo.
The original snapshot came from the India AI Impact Summit, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi stood beside Altman, Amodei and other AI leaders. The photo showed the leaders holding hands, but a gap appeared between Altman and Amodei. Wang’s edit placed the furry Muse mascot in that gap, holding both hands and prompting his caption, “What can’t Muse do?” and a joke about the mascot picking up a Nobel peace prize.
Within hours, the post was removed from X, and Wang did not offer a reason. The deletion sparked speculation that the image was deemed too sensitive or that Meta wanted to avoid inflaming tensions between rival firms. No official statement from Meta has been issued.
Muse, modeled on the open‑source AI agent OpenClaw, will be rolled out across Meta’s product ecosystem, including smart glasses, but the company has so far kept details under wraps. The incident underscores the fine line Meta walks as it positions itself in the competitive AI landscape while navigating public perception.
Wang’s tweet reflected Meta’s broader strategy to humanize its AI tools, but the abrupt removal suggests caution. Analysts say the episode could prompt Meta to review its social media guidelines for tech leaders.
