India's scooter sales hit a record 4.86 million units in the first half of FY2027, up 29% from the previous year. For a buyer eyeing a new ride, this means a wider palette of models, tighter pricing, and a growing push toward electric options as dealers scramble to meet demand.
EVs now account for 20% of the total 4.86 million sales – 978,017 units. That’s a 103% jump over the 2025‑26 period. TVS Motor Co topped the chart with 305,972 units, followed by Bajaj Auto’s 260,982 Chetaks and Yulus, together taking more than half of the EV market share.
Meanwhile, the ICE segment still dominates, with Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India dispatching 1.65 million units, a 15% lift YoY, and holding a 34% share. TVS follows at 1.43 million units, up 32%, tightening the race. The top four ICE players – Honda, TVS, Suzuki and Hero – keep their ranks, but Bajaj has bumped Yamaha into fifth place.
The 20% EV penetration is a clear signal that the government’s push for a cleaner two‑wheel market is bearing fruit. With duties on imported batteries easing and the new EV mandate tightening, buyers can now expect more affordable electric scooters and a broader range of models in the coming months.
Looking ahead, most OEMs are slated to roll out refreshed models in the next quarter, and the market may see a few new entrants in 2027. For buyers, the key will be to weigh price against features such as range and charging infrastructure, as the sector continues to evolve toward a 10 million unit milestone by the end of FY2027.
