At the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled OneTag, a portability facility that lets motorists keep the same FASTag when switching issuer banks. The launch marked a shift from the old model where a new tag had to be affixed for each bank change.
Under the existing scheme, a driver wishing to change banks had to surrender the current FASTag, submit a fresh onboarding packet, and wait for a new tag to be delivered. The process often cost time and inconvenienced commuters, especially those traveling long distances daily.
OneTag removes that hurdle. By using the NHAI Rajmargyatra app, users can verify eligibility, consent, and choose a new issuer while the Tag ID and registration number stay the same. The old issuer remains responsible for the wallet until the transfer completes.
A fresh KYC is mandatory; the app pushes a six‑digit MVC from the current issuer for verification, then the new bank conducts its own onboarding. Once the switch finishes, the old wallet is closed and any balance is refunded after adjustments.
Transport officials say the move could boost competition and improve service quality. Motorists in Delhi, for instance, have already signed up through the app, citing shorter wait times and lower costs as major benefits.
