On Thursday, Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said the Indian government will not impose a price ceiling on airfares during the festive season, but will urge airlines to keep fares reasonable.
Naidu cited soaring operating costs, noting that aviation fuel costs now account for 40 to 43 percent of ticket prices, and that the ongoing West Asia crisis has pushed jet fuel prices higher.
The minister added that the government has historically engaged with carriers through regular meetings, advising them to balance commercial interests with consumer affordability during peak travel periods.
Analysts say the absence of a formal cap signals a preference for market dynamics, but they warn that airlines could still hike fares on high‑demand routes if fuel surges persist and competition remains limited.
The ministry will keep monitoring the market and may intervene if price spikes become extreme, while travellers are advised to book early to lock in lower fares.
