Kapil Sibal, a senior advocate and former MP, filed a protest after the Election Commission sent him a notice questioning his citizenship during the ongoing SIR exercise in Delhi.
Sibal said he had provided all required information during a visit by a booth‑level officer and that his signature was on the form, yet the notice arrived via a journalist. He pointed out that the EC could have contacted him directly using his phone number, and he warned that the notice shows the commission can target even high‑profile figures.
The notice comes at a time when roughly 63 lakh names have been excluded from the draft electoral roll and nearly 32 lakh notices issued across Delhi. Other prominent names, including former Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, have also received similar notices for alleged discrepancies.
Sibal declared he would not vote in the forthcoming elections unless the EC corrects the mistake, saying, "People should know the EC does not consider me a citizen." He threatened to file a legal challenge if the commission fails to resolve the issue.
The Election Commission is scheduled to publish the final roll on November 4, and it must respond to Sibal’s complaint within 15 days to avoid a court case. The dispute underscores the broader concerns of thousands of Delhi voters who fear exclusion from the upcoming polls.
