For anyone who’s been stuck between a cramped hatchback and a pricey sedan, the Tata Aeris offers a new option. The car starts at ₹5.29 lakh, which is ₹1.01 lakh cheaper than the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and ₹71,000 less than the Hyundai Aura. That price point puts a three‑box shape into the same envelope as most hatchbacks.
Under the hood the Aeris runs a 1.0‑liter petrol engine that delivers 70 bhp and 100 Nm of torque. The base model comes with a manual gearbox, but buyers can upgrade to an AMT for ₹6.69 lakh or a CNG variant for ₹6.29 lakh. Higher trims push the price to ₹8.19 lakh, adding a 10.25‑inch touchscreen, ventilated seats, 360‑degree camera and a dash‑cam recorder. All models get six airbags and a revised rear suspension that keeps the boot area clear and the ride smooth.
Tata’s move comes at a time when compact sedans are losing ground to SUVs. Maruti sold 18,418 Dzires last August, while Tata’s Tigor splashed only 862. By slashing the entry price, Tata hopes to lure hatchback buyers who want more cabin space and a longer boot without paying a premium. The Aeris will also carry a distinct identity, as Tata has decided to keep it separate from its fleet‑centric Xpres‑T line.
The price tweak is part of a broader push to grow volume in the compact sedan segment, which sold 3.4–3.5 lakh units last year against 2.7 lakh five years ago. Tata estimates that 65% of those buyers are private customers, not fleet operators. By focusing on private demand and offering a fully equipped base, the Aeris aims to capture a slice of that expanding market.
The Aeris will go on sale across India starting September 2026, rolling out first in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore before expanding to other metros. Watch for how quickly dealers pick up the new model and whether the launch is supported by targeted marketing or special financing deals. The real test will be whether the aggressive pricing translates into sustained showroom traffic and sales volume.
