On 15 March 2026, the Mexican National Guard formally accepted Comando, a 13‑month‑old Chihuahua from the state of Chihuahua, into its canine roster.
The guard, which maintains about 350 dogs, usually fields German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers; Comando stands at 21 cm tall and weighs 7 kg.
During a session at the central training facility in Mexico City, Comando climbed a flight of stairs and navigated obstacles while a seasoned canine, Roko, observed.
Lt. Debora Hernandez said the dog’s presence underscores that even small animals can contribute meaningfully to public safety and morale.
Comando will also march in the upcoming Independence Day parade on 15 August, and the guard plans to roll out a series of community outreach videos featuring him.
