For three rows of luxury seating in India, your options were essentially binary: Mercedes or BMW. That changes in 2027. Audi India Brand Director Balbir Singh Dhillon confirmed via social media that the Q9 is coming to local shores, finally giving the four-rings a dedicated flagship to fight the GLS and X7. It’s not a concept anymore; it’s a date on the calendar. And for buyers who found the Audi Q7 slightly too compact for their family or corporate fleet, this is the long-awaited answer.
The sheer size is hard to ignore. At over 5.3 metres long, the Q9 dwarfs everything else in Audi’s current Indian range. It’s a standard seven-seater, but there’s an optional six-seat layout with power-adjustable captain’s chairs in the second row. That’s a configuration usually reserved for the ultra-premium tier, suggesting Audi isn’t just adding a car; they’re adding a status symbol. The cabin follows suit with a triple-screen setup: a 12.3-inch driver display, a 14.5-inch central Android Automotive OS screen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display with a privacy mode. It’s tech-heavy, but practical for long highway hauls.
Under the hood, the global lineup features a 3.0-litre V6 diesel (295bhp, 630Nm) and a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol (425bhp, 599Nm), with a 587bhp V8 SQ9 option. All come with 8-speed automatics and Quattro AWD. The catch? Audi hasn’t confirmed which engines will make the cut for India’s stricter emission and tax structures. Given the diesel segment’s global retreat, the petrol V6 is the likely candidate, but the V8 remains a distant dream for the local market. Expect the pricing to sit well above the current Q7, positioning it firmly in the low-volume, high-margin territory.
The exterior plays up the utility with illuminated vertical grille slats and Digital Matrix LED headlights that can project warning symbols onto the road. Those 3D curved digital OLED taillights are a segment first, adding a layer of visual distinctiveness that the GLS and X7 can’t match. Soft-closing doors with collision sensors and 20-23 inch alloys round out the package. It’s a lot of hardware, but the real test will be whether Audi can maintain the build quality at this scale.
Until 2027, though, don’t hold your breath. No India-spec pricing, trim levels, or engine confirmations have been released. If you’re currently looking at a GLS or X7, this announcement doesn’t change your immediate options. The Q9 is a future threat, not a current alternative. Watch for the official price reveal closer to the launch, but for now, it’s just a very expensive promise.
