Brendan Nugent, a 34‑year‑old resident of Tarrawingee, drove his car into the front of Helen Haines’ electoral office on Monday in Wangaratta, northeast of Melbourne, striking her twice and leaving her critically injured.
Haines, the independent Member for Indi who has championed climate and housing reforms, lost a leg and is now in critical condition after doctors amputated part of her lower limb.
Victoria Police, assisted by Anti‑Terrorism investigators, say the attack was a targeted act but remain uncertain of motive, noting no prior contact between Haines and Nugent.
In court Wednesday, Nugent was charged with three offenses of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a public official; bail was denied and the case postponed to February 4, 2025.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident a "violent incident" that underscores the growing divide in Australian politics, while the federal government promised to review security protocols for elected officials.
