The Federal Trade Commission announced on Thursday that it will scrutinize OpenAI, Anthropic and a third AI firm for possible consumer protection violations stemming from autonomous AI agents. According to the FTC filing, Chair Andrew Ferguson said the agency would request internal documents and executive testimony.
The probe follows a May 28 meeting where leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia and xAI signed a voluntary safety framework. The framework outlines internal controls and external audit requirements but is not legally binding.
Analysts warn that the FTC's focus on AI agent safety could expose companies to enforcement action if they misrepresent product capabilities. Such actions could translate into regulatory fines and reputational damage, potentially affecting valuations.
Investors should monitor the FTC’s next steps, as the probe could shape the outlook for AI innovation and potentially influence the earnings reports of tech giants.
