Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Apollo Hospital in Kolkata on Sunday morning, where 14 of the victims of the Chorbagan Durga Puja stampede were undergoing treatment. The tragedy unfolded on Saturday evening amid heavy rain, as a surge of devotees rushed the 10‑metre entrance of the Sarbojanin Pandal, crushing 25 people and injuring dozens.
Accompanied by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Shah spoke with doctors, reviewed the care being provided, and pledged a thorough investigation. Chief Minister Adhikari said the incident demands urgent action, while a 14‑year‑old survivor told reporters he feared for the safety of his friends.
Shah’s visit, which followed his cancellation of scheduled pandal tours, underscores the government’s intent to examine crowd‑control measures. The state government is expected to convene a committee later this week to formulate stricter safety protocols for future Durga Puja festivals.
