The Patiala House Court on Monday re‑imprisoned six suspects after their prior 14‑day detention had lapsed. Mahesh Gupta, his parents Urmila and Hariram, PG operators Shubham and Sudhanshu Tyagi, and labor contractor Sanoj had been released when the court’s earlier order expired on September 20.
The five‑storey Satya Niketan structure, dubbed “Hostel Daze,” collapsed at 1:30 p.m. on September 6, killing seven students from Delhi University’s South Campus. The building had been leased for paying‑guest accommodation since August 2025.
Delhi Police arrested the property owner, 75‑year‑old Urmila, her 81‑year‑old husband Hariram, and their 52‑year‑old son Mahesh on the same day of the collapse. The Tyagi brothers were apprehended later after the police traced the lease documents.
According to a police statement, the basement had been under repair for eight to ten days, with waste piling up during the monsoon. The ground floor repairs for a commercial extension were also underway, raising questions about compliance with building codes.
Civic authorities have suspended several Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials over the incident, and the Delhi High Court is hearing petitions that demand stricter safety norms for PGs across the capital.
The court’s extension will be reviewed after the police complete their forensic examination of the collapse site and compile a report on the building’s structural integrity.
