Jordan Hope, 18, was driving to a bank on Oct 5 when he spotted an elderly man struggling outside a Walgreens on John Wayne Parkway. The man's shoes were cracked, barely holding, so Hope handed him the pair he was wearing, a gesture that set the chain of events in motion.
The stranger, later identified as Mr Roy, was attempting to buy candy with limited cash. Hope paid for the sweets, then offered a ride to Culver’s, but Mr Roy’s swollen legs made a car trip impossible. Hope arranged a rideshare and followed him to the restaurant, where he bought lunch and sat with him for hours.
After the encounter, a bystander Yareli Madrid filmed the moment and shared it on Facebook, which quickly went viral. The video prompted Hope to open a GoFundMe on Oct 7 titled 'Care for Mr. Roy in His Time of Need,' pledging to cover groceries, medicine, and transportation. Donations poured in from Maricopa residents and beyond, bringing the total to about $25,000.
Mr Roy, who lost his wife approximately two weeks earlier, has now received the funds and a promise from Hope to surprise him with the money. The fundraiser will continue to allow donors to contribute to Mr Roy’s daily necessities as he mourns. The community’s response underscores the power of a single act of kindness.
