India’s foreign ministry issued a statement on Tuesday, warning that the U.S. Congress’ Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act—imposing 100% tariffs on goods from the two nations—could jeopardise the country’s trade flows.
The ministry said it will work closely with Indian trade and industry bodies to mitigate the impact on its 1.4 billion consumers and ensure energy security.
The act expands earlier sanctions that targeted Russian oil exports and Iranian financial services, and it signals a hard line against Moscow and Tehran.
India, which imports significant volumes of oil and gas from Russia, has repeatedly called for diversified sourcing and market‑driven solutions to secure energy supplies.
The government will convene a meeting of the National Council on Trade and Industry next week to draft a response strategy.
