A gunman opened fire from a vehicle in the streets of Trappes, a suburb 20 kilometres west of Paris, on Friday at 10:30 a.m., killing one person and wounding four others, police said.
The suspect, a 27‑year‑old man from nearby Coignières, was arrested as police pursued him toward the outskirts of the town after the shots rang out in Trappes and the neighbouring La Verrière.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh posted a short note on Instagram, calling the incident a "shooting from a vehicle at multiple people along his path", and urged residents to stay calm. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu replied on X that the case is "very serious" and that all security resources are mobilised.
The attack follows a week of nationwide protests over the cost of living, during which France endured its worst street violence in recent years; police have imposed curfews in major cities and are preparing for a larger deployment this weekend.
The victim, a 42‑year‑old office worker from Trappes, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest but is now in stable condition, according to local emergency services.
A full inquiry into the gunman's motives will be presented to the National Assembly on Monday, and investigators are examining any links to extremist networks.
