The IRGC, founded in 1979, controls Iran's military forces and its overseas proxy groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah, and was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. in 2019.
On Thursday, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned the Iranian digital‑asset exchange BitBank, its developer Pishtaz Simorgh Electronic Trade Company, and three associates of financier Babak Zanjani for facilitating hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin transfers to the IRGC.
The sanctions, coupled with the reward, are part of Operation Economic Outcast, a campaign to dismantle Iran’s revenue streams and sanctions‑evasion networks.
