Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the men’s senior selection committee will wrap up in 15 days, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia announced after the AGM, leaving the future of the panel in limbo.
Saikia, flanked by president Mithun Manhas, vice‑president Rajeev Shukla and Bengal chief Sourav Ganguly, said the board will decide "in an appropriate time" – a delay that has sparked speculation across the cricketing community.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is finalising a new five‑member junior selection committee, shortlisting candidates from a flood of applications. The appointments are slated for the next 10‑15 days, ensuring a seamless transition before the senior panel’s term expires.
Saikia also touched on the National Sports Governance Act, noting that cricket’s hefty ₹3,000 crore annual tax payment keeps it outside the ‘designated sport’ bracket until the government clears the requisite notification.
On a brighter note, the BCCI announced a promotion‑relegation system for domestic umpires, with ten posts up for grabs each season, and revealed that IPL‑2027 will kick off the last week of March, just in time for the 20th edition.
