The Ministry of Consumer Affairs rolled out a new rule that requires all packaged soaps, shampoos and toothpaste to carry a clear veg/non‑veg indicator, effective from Monday.
The change amends the 2011 Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, adding a visual cue that consumers can spot at a glance.
Products labelled as vegetarian will feature a green dot, while those containing non‑vegetarian ingredients will display a red or brown dot. The mark must sit on the upper edge of the principal display panel, ensuring visibility from any angle.
A spokesperson for the ministry said the move aims to give “more transparency to consumers and reduce dietary confusion.”
Retailers say the new symbols will help shoppers with dietary restrictions make quicker choices, while some consumers worry about the cost of redesigning packaging.
The rule will take effect next week; manufacturers have until the end of September to comply, with inspections scheduled to begin early October.
