The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) said it had pulled licences from ten food‑service operators across Mumbai on Monday, citing rampant rodent and insect contamination. Rodents ran rampant. Investigators found a live rat in a Swiggy Instamart dark‑store and saw 10‑kg rice bags gnawed open.
The agency listed a range of breaches: droppings in storage areas, a cockroach infestation on edible items, live flies inside carts, and ice‑packed refrigeration units laced with dirt and dead insects. The food regulator also recorded heavy ice build‑up and a mix of dead insects inside the units.
Among the affected licences were Swiggy Instamart at Ballard Estate, Sadguru Sweets and Farsan Mart in Malad, Acculogicx Supply Chain Solutions, Suleman Usman Mithaiwala on Mohammed Ali Road, Jain Sweet & Bhepuri House LLP, and Nice Enterprises in Chembur.
During the crackdown the FDA seized 1.36 crore rupees of khoya, mawa, peda, ghee, oil, barfi, dried apricots, raisins, jaggery and other dairy items, plus 1,868 kg of turmeric powder from Miraj.
The regulator announced it will conduct further inspections and may pursue legal action against the operators. The next steps will involve a review of the licences and possible revocation pending court orders.
