South Africa’s squad got a shake‑up after a brutal 214‑run defeat to Australia in Durban. Coach Shukri Conrad has dropped Tristan Stubbs and called up Matthew Breetzke for the second Test in Gqeberha.
Stubbs, who managed 33 runs across both innings, is out of the XI, while Breetzke—who’s already scored a century in his first ODI against the Aussies—will slot into the batting order. He boasts a first‑class average of 37 and a temperament that Conrad says will bring a ‘hot inside lane’ to the side.
The loss was a brutal 214‑run collapse, and the board couldn’t ignore the numbers. Stubbs’ contribution was a mere 33, and the team had to rethink batting structure. The change also opens the door for wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton to step in, possibly opening the innings himself—a role he’s taken on before.
Conrad added that Breetzke’s attitude and character are as important as his form. He might pair up with Aiden Markram at the top, but the real question is where Rickelton will bat—whether he continues to open or drops down the order. ‘We’ll look at conditions before play starts,’ the coach said.
Other adjustments are on the table too. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who missed the first Test due to a hamstring niggle, is expected to return. Tony de Zorzi is still on the sidelines, hamstring still healing, and Kyle Verreynne, though still in the squad, remains a possible drop.
With the second Test set to start on Sunday, the revised lineup could be the catalyst that swings the series in South Africa’s favour. The next test will be the real test of these changes.
