Assam Police hauled 27 Bangladeshi nationals from two separate locations in the state on September 16. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Border) Kulendra Nath Deka confirmed the arrests, noting that none of the individuals—men, women, and minors—possessed valid travel documents. The raids targeted suspected illegal migrants who allegedly entered India through Meghalaya.
The first operation struck home in Guwahati. Police scoured the ASTC campus in Paltan Bazar and detained 12 people. During interrogation, this group allegedly tipped off officers about a second, larger group of 15 Bangladeshi nationals riding the Jammu Tawi Express. Acting on this intel, Assam Police coordinated with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) to intercept the train after it crossed Rangiya junction. The 15 individuals were deboarded at Bongaigaon Railway Station and handed over to local authorities.
Police records indicate the apprehended individuals hail from Dhaka, Sunamganj, Gopalganj, Bagerhat, Khulna, and Mymensingh. Interrogations suggest most entered India seeking employment. Deka said investigators are now probing whether brokers or intermediaries facilitated this illegal entry. Criminal cases are being registered to trace the network behind their movement.
With the Border Police now before the Deputy Commissioner, the next step is an official expulsion order. Once issued, the 27 individuals will be deported to Bangladesh. The investigation into the facilitators remains open.
