The decision came after a huddle of selectors and senior players, with Shubman Gill and KL Rahul leading the discussion, as the Ranji season starts on October 11.
The plan stipulates that every senior player, including the captain, will play at least one state match if medical and workload checks allow. Bumrah’s run‑up is set to include either a Gujarat game or an India A outing, depending on how the schedule aligns with the T20I series that starts in Auckland on November 4.
The fast‑bowling core for the New Zealand Tests—Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna, Auqib Nabi and Akash Deep—will also get enough overs in the domestic circuit. Akash, who is back in the squad after a brief hiatus, will be closely monitored from his Irani Cup tie in Srinagar.
All‑rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is another player whose bowling will be tracked to add balance to the XI. With Ajit Agarkar unlikely to remain chief selector, Parthiv Patel is poised to step into the chair, a move the BCCI is still finalising.
