The 23‑year‑old British girl who died on Jan. 10, 2025 in a Texas home is now at the center of a fresh legal battle. Lucy Harrison, a student from England, arrived in Texas with her boyfriend Sam Littler to see her father Kris Harrison and his two younger half‑sisters. Hours before the fatal incident, the family quarreled over President Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration, a dispute that escalated when Harrison was asked if he possessed a firearm.
A Collin County grand jury, after reviewing police video, ruled the shooting accidental and refused to bring manslaughter charges. Harrison told investigators, “It just went off as she stood there, like as I pulled it out it went off,” a statement that the jury accepted as credible evidence.
Jane Coates, whose daughter was the victim, flew from England on May 28, 2026 and met with the district attorney’s office. She said, “I want the truth about what happened,” and demanded that investigators examine independent expert testimony that challenges Harrison’s account.
Retired Dallas homicide detective Craig Miller has highlighted discrepancies. He noted the bullet entered Lucy’s chest directly, not from the side, and that a downward trajectory does not align with Harrison’s explanation. Miller also pointed out the absence of a gunshot residue test and the lack of phone data review, arguing these gaps should have prompted a different grand jury decision.
Prosper police spokesperson confirmed the investigation will not be reopened, citing the grand jury’s closed file. The town’s statement stresses empathy for the family but acknowledges that the legal process is complete.
