Dhoni, still the heartbeat of CSK, has handed the reins to a former teammate whose bowling prowess lit up the 2011 World Cup finale. The move comes after the franchise failed to crack the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.
Management openly floated names like Hemang Badani, but the final decision rested on Dhoni’s trust in Zaheer’s experience and his mastery of reverse swing. “Dhoni obviously plays a key role in our decision‑making process,” says MD Kasi Viswanathan, adding that the captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad and the committee felt Zaheer was the best fit.
Zaheer, who took 21 wickets to tie with Afridi in the tournament, recalls his 5‑3‑6‑1 spell in the final at Wankhede as a career highlight. He welcomed the role, calling it an honour to join the most successful IPL franchise. “I’ve faced CSK on the field and enjoyed every contest,” he said.
With a coaching pedigree that spans RCB, MI and DD, Zaheer is expected to revamp CSK’s death‑over strategy and nurture young pacers. The team, which has struggled to make the playoffs, aims to turn the tide as the IPL season approaches.
