Assam police arrested four men and a woman on Thursday after a 31‑year‑old man was found beheaded near the Bhogdoi River in Jorhat district. The victims’ body was buried in a shallow pit beside the water and a plastic bag containing the severed head was discovered nearby, according to the investigation.
The victim, Anil Rajgarh, vanished on September 12, prompting his family to file a complaint. Police traced the body to the riverbank, where they uncovered the burial site and the plastic bag. The discovery was made within a few kilometres of the alleged crime scene.
The accused are Kapil Karmakar, 32, his wife Anima, 30, his brother Sanjit, 30, and their friend Mahesh Rajgarh, 33. All four residents of Greenview Tea Estate in Mariani are charged with murder and criminal conspiracy. Investigators allege that Rajgarh had been in contact with Anima for months and that she lured him to a tea garden, where he was attacked.
According to police sources, Anima first slit Rajgarh’s throat with a blade, after which the other men joined the assault. They then beheaded him with a machete, wrapped the body in a sack, and dragged it to the riverbank. The suspects remain in custody as the investigation moves toward formal charge filing.
