BCCI has handed the power to decide Ajit Agarkar’s fate to its office‑bearers, setting the clock to 30 September when his contract lapses.
At Friday’s AGM in Mumbai, Vice‑President Rajeev Shukla confirmed the board’s approval, citing a need to “take a decision on selectors.” He added that Arun Singh Dhumal and Majumdar would keep their IPL council posts.
Agarkar took the helm of the men’s senior selection committee back in July 2023, but the board has yet to extend his term. Without an extension, a new chairman will have to be advertised and interviewed – a process that could stretch well into the next quarter.
Parthiv Patel, the former India wicket‑keeper‑batter with 25 Test caps, is already eyeing the role. If he steps in, he’d become the most experienced member of the panel, which already includes SS Das (23 Tests), RP Singh (14 Tests), Pragyan Ojha (24 Tests) and Ajay Ratra (6 Tests).
The selectors’ next task is to shape India’s squads for the home white‑ball series against the West Indies and then the Test and ‘A’ tours to New Zealand. The decision on Agarkar will therefore ripple through the upcoming fixtures, potentially altering the composition of teams that will face a strong New Zealand side in October and November.
