Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X on Tuesday to hail Indian‑origin Flydubai pilot Smit Machchhar for his bravery during a recent emergency that saved hundreds of lives.
The incident unfolded on a commercial flight operated by Flydubai, when the aircraft encountered a sudden malfunction that required immediate intervention from Captain Machchhar, who sustained serious injuries in the process.
In his post, Modi described the pilot as a hero, saying, "Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy."
Modi’s words echo India’s longstanding support for its citizens abroad and reinforce the country’s commitment to aviation safety.
The pilot is currently receiving treatment in a Dubai hospital, and officials expect a prolonged recovery period; a formal commendation or award is likely to follow.
As the aviation community watches, the incident underscores the critical role of skilled pilots and the importance of rapid emergency response in preventing catastrophic outcomes.
