Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Warring has been told by the party high command to step aside, and he has already offered to resign, sources said Wednesday.
The move follows a bitter split that erupted after Congress retained Warring as state chief while appointing former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi as campaign chair on July 1, sparking a factional war.
Vijay Inder Singla, a Hindu face and a Working Committee member, is seen as the front‑runner, with other contenders including former Olympian Pargat Singh, ex‑MLA Rana KP Singh, and ex‑CM Charanjit Singh Channi still in the mix.
The turmoil echoes the party’s 2022 setback when it won only 18 seats out of 117, a steep drop from 77 seats in 2017, and the loss of Channi’s bid for two assembly seats.
A formal announcement naming the new Punjab chief is expected within the next week, which the high command says will aim to mend the split before the 2027 Assembly elections.
