Hero MotoCorp will lift its VIDA electric scooter output to more than 80,000 units a month by the second quarter of FY28, up from 30,000 in September 2026. The move comes after dealers reported a one‑day inventory, signalling a crunch that has spurred the company to double its production capacity in just a year.
For the everyday rider, the upscaling means a tighter supply chain and the chance to snag a scooter with a 3.1 kWh or 4.4 kWh battery without the premium price tag. The 4.4 kWh version, already a fan favourite, is expected to see more units hit the road as volumes rise.
VIDA’s market share nudged up to roughly 13.5‑14% in October, a jump that reflects both the brand’s expanding lineup and the wider surge in electric two‑wheelers. The company now sells its models through about 700 retail points, with 450 of them regularly stocked.
While the electric unit scales, Hero is not neglecting its petrol side. The Destini and Xoom ranges have seen their monthly output nearly double, reaching around 80,000 units a month – a figure that keeps the brand competitive in the traditional segment.
Financially, VIDA turned gross‑margin positive in Q2 FY27, thanks to higher volumes and cost cuts, but it still logged an EBITDA drag of Rs 168 crore. The PLI certification covering most of the lineup should help smooth the economics as production climbs.
By Q2 FY28, the expanded plant should feed a wider dealer network, bringing VIDA scooters to more cities and reducing the one‑day inventory that has made it difficult for buyers to find the right model. The next step will be to see how the increased supply translates into deeper market penetration and whether the premium variants maintain their 40% share of the portfolio.
