On September 12, police in Ansan detained an unnamed former chat moderator after he seized a female streamer by the neck in a Sangnok‑gu restaurant, brandishing a weapon and pouring hot water on her legs—an assault that left her with a neck abrasion and burn injuries. The standoff, which began around 5:20 p.m., lasted roughly thirty minutes before officers forced him to surrender.
The suspect had previously managed the streamer’s live‑chat during her broadcasts and the dispute erupted after a falling out that spilled into her livestream, with insults exchanged both on the stream and on other social‑media channels. The streamer had also filed a defamation complaint, and her discussions about the case were livestreamed, reportedly provoking the suspect’s anger.
During the confrontation, officers employed a tactical ploy—offering the suspect water to lure him into a vulnerable position. When he shifted the weapon, an officer knocked it away, and two Tasers were fired to subdue him. One officer suffered a cut that required three stitches, while the suspect continued to refuse orders to drop the weapon.
Police charged the suspect with preparation for murder, aggravated injury, aggravated confinement and are evaluating additional counts such as attempted murder and retaliatory crime. Hostage‑related charges were not pursued because the suspect made no demands while holding the streamer.
