On 20 Oct, the NSE Nifty slipped 1.11%, shedding 257.20 points to 22,888.95, and the BSE Sensex fell 1.17%, losing 876.37 points to 73,852.90, as the market closed for the Dussehra holiday.
The downturn was broad‑based: every NSE sectoral index trended lower except the PSU Bank index, which climbed 2.41%. Weak private‑bank shares, below‑budget earnings, and a surge in crude prices compounded the sell‑off.
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) follows a split schedule on holidays. While the morning session will remain closed on 20 Oct, the evening session from 5 pm to 11.30 pm will open, allowing commodity traders to resume activity.
Looking ahead, the 2026 market calendar lists Diwali‑Balipratipada on 10 Nov and Guru Nanak Jayanti on 24 Nov as full‑day holidays, with MCX trading suspended only in the morning. Christmas on 25 Dec will see both morning and evening sessions shut.
