Rahul Gandhi addressed the INDIA bloc in the Central Hall of Parliament, citing Jawaharlal Nehru’s 1947 “Tryst with Destiny” speech to rally MPs against what he called a “deep problem” in the sitting government. The speech echoed Nehru’s famous address, which he used to remind the assembly of the nation’s democratic promise. Gandhi argued that the current government’s weak response to alleged vote‑count fraud was a “deeper problem” that threatened the very foundations of the state.
He warned that continued opposition protests over the alleged “vote chori” could topple the Modi‑led government. The call to terminate the administration followed the Chief Election Commissioner's refusal to meet elected representatives, a move Gandhi called disrespectful.
The gathering, held in the Central Hall of Parliament, drew Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Karnataka CM DK Shivakumar, Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, TMC's Mamata Banerjee, and NCP's Supriya Sule among others.
Gandhi framed his message as a rally to “fight for freedom” and “not let the star of hope fade”, citing Nehru's 1947 pledge of a “new star rises.” He urged the opposition to keep the movement alive, warning that the government would fall if the agitation continues.
The Congress party now plans to file a motion of no confidence in the next parliamentary session, with the vote slated for early June.
