The Assam Police, acting on a tip from local informants, intercepted a motorised boat carrying 27 Bangladeshi nationals at Jogomaya Ghat in Dhubri district on Friday.
Dhubri, which shares a porous riverine border with Bangladesh, has long been a conduit for irregular crossings. The boat had reportedly landed in Dhubri after traveling from Hatsingimari, a town on the Bangladesh side of the Brahmaputra.
Assam police sources said the detainees are now being questioned at the Dhubri police reserve to verify their identities and gather further details.
In a parallel development, Kharuabandha Police in Hatsingimari arrested four individuals accused of facilitating the movement of Bangladeshi nationals for money. The four are currently being interrogated in South Salmara‑Mankachar district as part of the same investigation.
The arrests are part of a broader crackdown on illegal cross‑border migration, with authorities pledging to intensify surveillance along the riverine frontier. The case will be forwarded to the Assam High Court for adjudication once the investigations are complete.
