The commission opened ballot boxes in Gandhinagar, Thara and Okha, setting the stage for a comprehensive tally that spans 44 GMC seats, 24 Thara seats and 32 Okha seats.
The BJP, which governed the GMC for the past five years and secured 41 of 44 seats in the 2021 polls, now faces a challenge from Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.
Voter turnout varied sharply: Gandhinagar saw 59.25% participation, Thara jumped to 81.18%, and Okha registered 63.27%.
Joint Commissioner N K Damor praised the peaceful voting process, noting that electronic voting machines were used across all three municipalities.
Bypolls for single seats in Kheralu, Chhota Udepur, Bayad and several district panchayats are also underway, adding further layers to the state’s municipal electoral landscape.
Counting continues into the evening; final results will be announced by the end of Tuesday, setting the tone for Gujarat’s local governance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
