Kevin Mannix, 68, shot his estranged wife Ann, 65, and their daughter Katherine, 24, in their home on Sunday night, before turning the gun on himself. The gunfire rang out shortly after 5 pm in Strawberry, a suburb of Mill Valley.
The Mannix couple had long careers with the San Francisco Police Department: Kevin retired in 2018 after 27 years of service; Ann retired in 2021 after rising to the rank of deputy chief and becoming the first woman to lead the department’s SWAT team. Their lives were intertwined with law‑enforcement history.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association released a statement describing Ann as a trailblazer who broke barriers in special operations. Police Chief Derrick Lew sent a note of sorrow to department members, noting the shockwaves that hit the force.
Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff's Office arrived within minutes of a 911 call, secured the perimeter, and entered the residence. They found the three bodies dead, and a 911 caller was escorted to safety. Authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
The sheriff’s office has not disclosed motive. The case is now a homicide investigation, with forensic teams collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. A press briefing is scheduled for later this week to provide updates.
The investigation will continue as the sheriff’s office compiles forensic reports, and the state will decide whether to charge a suspect beyond the suicide ruling.
