The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved 12 infrastructure projects totalling Tk 1.69 trillion, of which three are metro rail lines for Dhaka.
L&T previously delivered the integrated rail systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, now in commercial operation, which proved the company's expertise in large‑scale urban transit.
Under contract packages CP09 and CP10, L&T, alongside Japanese partner Sumitomo Corporation, will design, procure, install and commission track works, power supply, signalling, telecommunication and platform screen doors across the 31‑km corridor.
The line will run from Kamalapur to the airport and from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal, covering 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj, and is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman invited Japanese investors to Bangladesh and highlighted the metro project as a key opportunity for foreign investment, signalling a push for more international partnerships.
L&T has announced that site preparation will begin in November, with track laying expected to start in March 2027, and full operations targeted for late 2029, after a series of commissioning tests.
