Shalu Manocha walked out of Kanpur jail on Tuesday, a free woman after 21 days spent behind bars for a crime she did not commit. The court granted her relief, overturning the initial police narrative that branded her the mastermind behind her father-in-law’s murder. For Shalu, the exit was not just legal; it was a physical escape from what she described as the "worst days of my life."
The case began on September 5 when Vineet Manocha, 60, was stabbed to death at his Ratan Orbit apartment in Kalyanpur. Kanpur police initially arrested Shalu, her former employee Vishal Gautam, and Gautam’s associate Rajkishore. But the investigation took a sharp turn when forensic analysis revealed the actual killer made six calls to Vineet’s son, Subrat Manocha, from a newly purchased SIM card. That detail cracked the case wide open. Subrat was arrested on September 23 and confessed to plotting the murder, claiming he feared his father would move in with another woman and transfer his property to her. Police now allege Subrat and Vishal deliberately framed Shalu to divert suspicion.
"Every moment, morning and evening, I was haunted by thoughts of my son. I couldn't sleep without him. His image was constantly before my eyes," Shalu told reporters outside the jail gates, her voice steady but her eyes betraying the exhaustion of the past month. She credited her lawyer, Shivakant, for standing by the truth and securing her release. "Truth prevailed. I am deeply grateful," she said. She also thanked local MLA Neelima-ji for her support during the ordeal.
Shalu refused to comment on her husband’s role, stating, "I have nothing to say. The police and administration are doing their work." She asked for time to regain her composure, saying she has not yet made decisions about her future. The Kanpur police will continue their investigation into Subrat Manocha and the alleged cover-up, with a formal charge sheet expected in the coming weeks as the court reviews the remaining evidence.
