Rahul Gandhi invited leaders from the INDIA bloc, opposition MPs, student bodies, and civil‑society representatives to his Delhi residence on March 27, 2024, for a high‑tea meeting aimed at coordinating a response to the Gyanesh Kumar case.
The gathering follows a “March for Democracy” that saw Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee, RJD Working President Tejashwi Yadav, CPI's D Raja, CPI(M)'s MA Baby, and NCP‑SP's Supriya Sule walk to the Supreme Court to file a petition against the Election Commission.
Rahul said the meeting would keep the opposition united and prevent fragmentation over the case that has already drawn criticism from the Election Commission and the central government.
“All protests are one,” he tweeted, adding that after the tea the participants would present a joint case to the media to rally public support for what he calls a “people’s movement to protect democracy.”
Students from the All India Students’ Association, led by Neha Bora, and civil‑society representatives who had marched earlier, will use the gathering to fine‑tune messaging before the media briefing scheduled for the next afternoon.
The opposition will convene a press conference on March 28 at 10 a.m. in Delhi, where they will release a unified statement demanding the Election Commission reconsider Gyanesh Kumar's appointment.
