When you’re buying an EV, the hidden hero is the lubricant that keeps its battery cool. That’s why the recent MoU between LANXESS India and BPCL matters. The two giants are teaming up to churn out new, locally‑made lubricants that could slash maintenance costs and boost battery longevity across India’s growing EV fleet.
The deal covers a suite of 7 core products – from bearing and circulating oils to specialty greases and industrial additive packages. Each of those plays a role in a car’s gearbox, transmission, and powertrain. In practice, a better‑formulated oil means smoother shifting, less wear, and a longer life for your drivetrain.
But the real buzz is that LANXESS brings advanced additive tech and OEM relationships, while BPCL adds its massive base‑oil production and nationwide distribution. Together they’re looking at localising recipes, running field trials in real‑world conditions, and hunting the paperwork needed for OEM approvals. For a buyer, that translates into fewer import duties and cheaper service parts.
The MoU also eyes the next frontier: bio‑based lubricants for EV battery packs and immersion cooling fluids for data centres. Imagine a battery pack that stays cooler and lasts longer because the coolant is plant‑derived and engineered for high‑temperature stability. That’s the kind of tech that could push EV range up by a few kilometres and cut the cost of a charging station’s cooling system.
There’s no set launch date yet; the partners are still evaluating and testing. Once the first batch clears tests and OEMs sign off, the lubricants could hit the market within a year or so. For enthusiasts, keep an eye on the next generation of engine oils that promise better performance and greener chemistry.
