The Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus bound for Kilambakkam was rattled by a woman who, according to passengers, appeared intoxicated and refused to purchase a ticket before she struck a man on the head and later seized a woman’s hair—sparking a scuffle that forced the driver to halt.
The confrontation began with the woman occupying the raised dashboard near the front window, arguing loudly with fellow commuters and questioning why she should use public transport when she usually takes a cab. Passengers attempted to calm her, but she declined to provide contact details or cooperate when approached.
When a male passenger tried to speak to her, she responded by slapping him, prompting other passengers to gather around, while a saree‑clad woman confronted the agitated rider and was pulled by her hair during the melee. The bus eventually stopped, and the driver escorted the woman out of the vehicle.
Police were alerted immediately after the bus was removed from service. The Kumaran Nagar Police are conducting an enquiry to establish the woman’s identity, examine the video footage, and record statements from drivers, conductors and witnesses.
The incident has already gone viral online, with several videos circulating on social media, drawing attention to the challenges faced by commuters on overcrowded routes. Authorities have urged passengers to report any suspicious behaviour and said the investigation will determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
Investigation is expected to conclude within the next few weeks, after which the police will decide on further action and whether the woman will face charges under the Public Safety Act.
