Sonitpur Senior Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha said police received a call at about 1:30 p.m. that a body had been found in a locked hostel room on the Tezpur University campus.
The victim was a 20‑year‑old BSc student from Nagaon district, enrolled in Integrated Chemistry, who shared the room with a roommate who had gone to morning classes. When the roommate returned, he discovered the door locked from inside and a body hanging by the ventilator, the registrar Chandan Goswami told reporters.
Police recovered the body and transported it to Kanaklata Civil Hospital, where doctors confirmed the death before a post‑mortem was conducted, Purkayastha added.
An anonymous student told the media that the deceased had left a diary containing a note about his life and death, but the police declined to disclose its contents, the SSP clarified.
The family collected the body around 7 p.m., and investigators will now interview witnesses and staff, Purkayastha said. University officials are cooperating, and a condolence event is slated for Thursday, the registrar added.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the campus, with students gathering outside the hostel to mourn; one student said the tragedy has made them all feel vulnerable.
