At 11 a.m. Monday, a Sudanese drone struck Amiet Market in Abyei, blowing up a nearby fuel depot and killing 153 people.
Yohanna Akol Ngor, caretaker information minister of Abyei, blamed the Sudanese army, while a senior officer—speaking under anonymity—claimed the drones targeted fuel tankers destined for the Rapid Support Forces and that the casualties were mostly RSF members and smugglers.
The United Nations Secretary‑General condemned the attack, saying it violated humanitarian law and that many civilians, including women and children, were killed, with the death toll expected to rise as UNISFA continues verification.
Doctors Without Borders treated more than 20 wounded at Ameth Bek Hospital, while South Sudan’s foreign ministry summoned Sudan’s ambassador to protest and urged restraint; UNISFA deployed medical and firefighting teams to aid victims.
