The market reaction was immediate and sharp. Avalon Technologies (NSE: AVALONTECH) saw its shares dip as much as 5% on Wednesday, September 30, following the execution of a massive block trade. The transaction involved 40.5 lakh shares, representing 6.06% of the company's total equity, changing hands at an average price of ₹2,181 per share. The total value of the deal stood at ₹883 crore, according to exchange data.
This isn't a surprise move. On Tuesday, CNBC-TV18 reported, citing sources, that three promoter entities were set to sell up to 6% of the outstanding equity. The sellers are identified as Bhaskar Srinivasan, BBS Family Trust, and KBS Family Trust. The indicative price range quoted in the report was ₹2,150 to ₹2,302 per share, which aligns closely with the final execution price. A 180-day lock-in period applies to these sellers for any further disposal of shares.
Contextualizing the stake reduction: As of the June quarter, promoter entities held a 44.39% stake in Avalon Technologies. Specifically, Bhaskar Srinivasan held 9.39%, while BBS Family Trust and KBS Family Trust each held 3.02%. Public shareholders held the remaining 55.61%. This sale, if fully attributed to these entities, would significantly dilute their collective holding. The official identities of the buyers in this specific block deal remain undisclosed at this stage.
The stock's trajectory this month has been erratic. Despite the current slide, Avalon Technologies is up 154% year-to-date. It hit a fresh record high of ₹2,618 on September 18, driven by a 13.8% intraday surge. Prior to that, on September 7, the stock hit a previous all-time high of ₹2,424 after brokerage firm Nomura sharply raised its target price to ₹2,767.32. However, the stock has been trading in the red for most of September, currently sitting 5.5% lower on a one-month basis.
Investors are now watching the 180-day lock-in period and the overall promoter stake trajectory. With the stock trading 3.3% lower at ₹2,224.8 on Wednesday, the immediate pressure from the block deal is evident. The market will be looking for clarity on whether further stake sales are planned and how the remaining promoter entities view the company's valuation after hitting such aggressive highs recently.
