Lovedeep Singh Sandhu, an Indian national, died at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand on November 4, the day he turned another year older. The hospital confirmed he was admitted for emergency treatment following an incident that left him with severe burn injuries. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he succumbed to his wounds. The specific circumstances leading to the burns have not yet been disclosed, and authorities are yet to release a detailed account of the incident.
His cousin, Neelkamal Singh Sandhu, who is coordinating the family’s response, described the timing as devastating. “Losing our brother on his own birthday has made this tragedy even more heartbreaking for our entire family,” Neelkamal wrote in a public appeal. He emphasized that a day meant for celebration will now mark a permanent loss for the family.
The family faces a significant financial hurdle in bringing Lovedeep back to India. Repatriation involves complex logistics, including air freight, customs clearance, and funeral arrangements, costs that the family currently cannot shoulder. Neelkamal launched a fundraiser on the Givealittle platform to cover these expenses. Any surplus funds collected will go directly to supporting Lovedeep’s parents during their mourning period.
“Our greatest wish is to bring Lovedeep’s body back to India so our family can perform his final rites and give him the dignified farewell he deserves,” the appeal stated. Neelkamal has urged the public to contribute or share the link to help the family navigate this crisis. The fundraising campaign is live, and the family is awaiting contributions to expedite the repatriation process. Until the funds are secured and the body is transported, the family remains in New Zealand, coordinating with local authorities and embassies to complete the necessary paperwork.
