The International Crimes Tribunal, chaired by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, handed down the death sentences on Tuesday in a proceeding held in absentia.
The seven men were accused of crimes against humanity during the July 2024 mass uprising that toppled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Convicted leaders include party general secretary Obaidul Quader, joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, executive committee member Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League chairperson Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League general secretary Md Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League president Md Saddam Hossain, and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
Quader posted on Facebook after the verdict, warning that the Awami League has been creating an atmosphere of fear, and that Hasina's December return will not deter the party from seeking power.
The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of 50 percent of the defendants' movable and immovable assets and directed that proceeds be used to compensate families of those killed or injured in the uprising through the July Foundation.
Defendants can appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court, but the ruling is currently final and will be enforced by the federal police.
