The Supreme Court on Friday demanded Delhi keep metro stations open before Saturday’s Cockroach Janta Party protest. The court said shutting down stations would deny commuters their basic rights.
The court told the Centre that everything cannot be shut as people travel from all parts of the city, including young and elderly commuters.
It asked the government to reduce the number of closed metro stations, but no figure was disclosed in the court’s order.
The CJP, a fringe party known for satirical demonstrations, has scheduled a rally at Azad Maidan on Saturday, a site that has seen major traffic disruptions in past protests.
Delhi Municipal Corporation said it will comply with the court’s demand, and the government will present a revised plan to commuters by Monday.
The court will hear the government’s reply in its next session, setting the stage for a decision on balancing public order with commuter needs.
