Tejaswin Shankar clinched the decathlon bronze at the Asian Games in Nagoya, clocking a 4:33.09 1500m to finish with 7,934 points.
He broke the field in three of the ten events – a 8.10m long jump, a 2.05m high jump, and that race‑winning 1500m – turning his campaign into a podium finish.
The final sprint proved the decisive moment. Despite Yuma Maruyama’s points cushion from earlier events, Shankar’s blistering run left Japan’s Yuma trailing as Maruyama collected gold with 8,123 points.
India’s tally now sits at 4 golds, 15 silvers and 16 bronzes – the 35th medal of the Games – and Shankar’s bronze is the 11th athletics medal, still short of the country’s first track‑and‑field gold.
With the decathlon over, the focus shifts to the remaining athletics events, where India aims to push past the bronze barrier and secure that elusive gold.
