Assam’s cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, yesterday approved a 12% reservation for Agniveers in constable‑level recruitment across the police, fire, jail and forest services, and introduced a Rs 3,000 green tax on the sale or transfer of vehicles older than three years.
The quota applies only to Agniveers who are permanent residents of Assam; soldiers from other states are excluded even if they completed the same four‑year service.
Positions covered include Assam Police AB and UB constables, commando personnel, jail warders, firemen, SDRF constables, forest guards and excise constables.
The green tax exempts electric and CNG cars, two‑ and three‑wheelers, and smaller‑capacity vehicles, and also waives the charge when a vehicle is transferred to a son or daughter after the owner’s death.
Sarma said the proceeds would fund environmental initiatives such as afforestation and soil‑erosion control, while the quota would allow veterans to channel their training into state services.
The cabinet also cleared other measures, including merging the PWD (National Highways) wing with PWD (Roads) and approving three draft MoUs for the Jal Jeevan Mission with Bodoland, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao councils.
