At about 6:30 pm on Friday, September 18, a 33‑year‑old Yemeni national named Ali Balhad pulled a Sikh bus driver’s beard and slammed his head against it before ramming the driver out of the vehicle. The bus, a city‑operated minibus, was then driven off Court Street in Madeley and spun onto Park Way, colliding with several cars before police could intervene. A by‑stander’s shaky footage captured the assault, the thief’s harassment of the driver, and his forced exit as the bus careened in the wrong direction. The driver, who suffered only minor cuts, was later treated by paramedics.
Police received a call at 6:37 pm and dispatched armed officers from Malinsgate station within ten minutes, stopping the vehicle and detaining Balhad on suspicion of robbery and dangerous driving. Superintendent Edward Hancox said the swift response prevented further injuries. Balhad was booked into Telford Magistrates Court for a hearing scheduled for Monday, September 21.
Chief Officer Hancox described the incident as “a serious breach of public safety” and assured residents that the investigation would probe the motive behind the robbery. Detective Sergeant Taigh Lannie urged anyone with dash‑cam or CCTV footage to come forward, noting that the video from a nearby shopfront could help piece together the chain of events. Balhad faces charges of aggravated vehicle taking, assault, attempted grievous bodily harm, driving dangerously, robbery, theft from a shop, threats to kill, and three counts of criminal damage.

A Telford resident who witnessed the incident said, "It felt like a nightmare; you think it’s just a robbery, but the bus was being driven into other cars."
