The crash unfolded at Shakti Nagar roundabout in South Delhi after a speeding driver attempted a left‑hand overtaking manoeuvre on an e‑rickshaw. The manoeuvre was executed too close to the curb, prompting the driver to swerve to avoid a second e‑rickshaw that appeared ahead; the sudden turn sent the vehicle into the divider and rolled it onto its side.
The rear passenger, who was seated in the back seat, was almost thrown out of the car through the back window during the roll‑over, but managed to avoid striking the road or the divider. All occupants escaped with only minor bruises, and local bystanders helped flip the vehicle back onto the road.
Delhi Police opened a preliminary inquiry after receiving a caller’s report of rash driving. A spokesperson for the Police Department, Shreya Sharma, said the team arrived within twenty minutes, found the driver intoxicated, and registered an FIR.
The incident follows an earlier report from the same day in which a drunken driver in South Delhi’s CR Park rammed an SUV into parked cars and injured a community dog, a case that is also under investigation.
Traffic safety advocates are calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits and better public awareness of lane‑keeping rules, citing the rise in such incidents across the city.
The driver remains at large; authorities have warned that a formal charge sheet will be issued if the investigation confirms negligence or violation of traffic laws.
